Winter in Syracuse: 56% of People Predict Higher Than Average Snowfall

Syracuse, NY is one of, if not the snowiest city in New York State. It is a running joke that CNY celebrates Mother’s Day with snow still on the ground.

Our Syracuse market research company wanted to poll the community to learn how much snow they thought we’d get this 2021 winter season.

For context, Syracuse average 104 inches of snow per year compared to the national average of 28 inches.

Our survey showed that 56% of Syracuse residents predict 100 to 149 inches of snowfall this upcoming winter.

CHART-Snowfall predicition for Syracuse 2021-2022 winter season

Previous Snowfall Records in Syracuse

While a majority of the Syracuse community believes we will experience a higher than average snowfall, how does this compare to years past?

According to CNY Weather, here was the total snowfall for previous years

  • 2020/2021: 74.6 inches
  • 2019/2020: 73.6 inches
  • 2018/2019: 89.8 inches
  • 2017/2018: 109.7 inches
  • 2016/2017: 110.4 inches

Last year, Syracuse experienced the biggest shortfall in snow across the entire country.

According to Syracuse.com, we had 53.8 inches less than an average year. We were ahead of Maine who took second place with 42.3 inches behind its normal season total.

Embracing the Snow with SU Men’s Basketball

Love it or hate it, there is no escaping the snow in Upstate New York.

Therefore, all that’s left to do is embrace it. There are so many great activities to enjoy this winter such as ice skating at Clinton Square and seeing the snow-loving species at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.

Perhaps the most widely loved activity across CNY is watching Syracuse Men’s Basketball games -- whether it be at the Dome, your couch, or a local bar and restaurant.

In addition to asking about the snowfall predictions, Drive Research also asked respondents about SU basketball.

43% of respondents are excited about the Syracuse Men’s Basketball season that just kicked off. We started the season off strong with a W against Lafayette.

Respondents were also asked to predict when head coach Jim Boeheim will retire -- a question that has been on the minds of Syracuse fans for years.

Here are the top answers to when Boeheim will retire as head coach:

  • After the 2021-2022 season 10%
  • After the 2022-2023 season 22%
  • Sometime between the next three to five seasons 43%
  • After the next five seasons 3%
  • Never 9%
  • I don’t know 13%

I’ll be sure to bookmark this post and look back at what percentage of the CNY community was right when Boeheim announces his final season.
