What's Stopping Syracuse Car Drivers from Buying Electric Vehicles?

Likelihood of Purchasing Electric Vehicles in Syracuse

While recent studies have shown interest in driving electric vehicles is on the rise, a majority of Syracuse car buyers are still not likely to choose an EV as their next purchase.

Six in ten Syracuse respondents were not at all likely to consider an electric vehicle for their next automobile purchase (61%).

This percentage was higher in comparison to the national representative survey where 51% of car buyers were not at all likely to buy an EV as their next purchase.

Additionally, younger Syracuse residents (those born after 1976) were more likely to consider purchasing an electric vehicle as older residents (those born before 1977) were strongly opposed to considering purchasing an electric vehicle. 


Barriers for Syracuse Car Drivers to Buying Electric Vehicles

What’s stopping Syracuse car drivers from buying an EV? There were various barriers mentioned.

The top barriers Syracuse car drivers have for not purchasing an EV included:

  • A shorter driving range than gas-powered vehicles (73%)
  • Difficulty in finding/planning for a charging station (68%)
  • The high cost of a battery replacement (66%)
  • Expensiveness (65%)

Additionally, a little more than half cited electric vehicles having a long charging time (54%).

Reasons for Purchasing an Electric Car in Syracuse

A quarter of Syracuse respondents (25%) were at least somewhat likely to consider an electric vehicle as their next automobile purchase with nearly one in five (19%) being very likely.  

The top reasons for Syracuse residents who would consider purchasing an electric vehicle included:

  • Better for the environment (49%)
  • Lower or eliminate fuel costs (44%)
  • Less expensive & maintenance (28%)
  • Tax credits & incentives (26%)
  • Run more quietly (22%)

Details of the Syracuse Electric Vehicle Interest Survey

Survey Methodology

  • The survey received 264 responses
  • Fieldwork was conducted with adult Syracuse residents (18 years or older).
  • Fieldwork for the EV survey began on May 28 and lasted until Jun 28, 2021.
  • The online survey included 10 questions and took Syracuse respondents an average of 3 minutes to complete.

  • 4% of respondents were Generation Z. 4
  • 17% of respondents were Millennials. 23
  • 19% of respondents were Generation X. 34
  • 51% of respondents were Baby Boomers. 172
