Right now, the country is divided. We have two sides with opposite opinions, each feeling very passionate that they are in the right. Of course, I am referring to the pumpkin spice coffee debate. You either love pumpkin-flavored beverages, or you hate them.

As a market research company based in New York, we couldn’t help but put some data behind these two opinions. We were curious to learn of New Yorkers, what percent of the state is for or against seasonal coffee flavors.

In a recent survey, Drive Research polled 500 New Yorkers to ask the following questions?

  • Do you like pumpkin spice-flavored drinks?
  • What store(s) sell the best tasting seasonal coffee drinks?

Furthermore, we broke down the results per New York State Designated Market Areas (DMAs) to see how preferences changed throughout the state.

Overall, 51% of New York residents like pumpkin spice-flavored drinks. It seems the debate will continue as PSL lovers and haters are close to an even split.

Here is how different NY DMAs differ based on whether they do or don’t like pumpkin spice flavored drinks:

  • 25% don’t like pumpkin spice flavored drinks

Rochester DMA

  • 51% like pumpkin spice flavored drinks
  • 44% don’t like pumpkin spice flavored drinks

Syracuse-Utica DMA

Most Popular Seasonal Coffee Brand

Map Shows What Coffee Brands People Like Most in NYS

Although most New Yorkers are split on whether they like fall-flavored beverages, their choice of a seasonal coffee brand is a clear winner.

We asked respondents, “What store(s) sell the best tasting seasonal coffee drinks?” They were able to select all brands that they loved.

Seasonal coffee brand providers included:

  • Starbucks
  • Dunkin’
  • McDonald's 
  • Tim Hortons
  • Dutch Bros
  • Local coffee shop
  • Other (Please specify)

The Buffalo DMA was the only outlier as their preferred coffee brand was Starbucks. The rest of New York runs on Dunkin’.

Survey Methodology

  • The survey received 502 responses
  • Fieldwork was conducted with adult residents (18 years or older) of New York State.
  • Fieldwork for the survey began on September 7th and lasted united September 10th, 2021.

  • Who is your favorite NFL sports team?

Respondent Profile (By Gender)

  • 18% of respondents were male.
  • 81% of respondents were female.
  • 1% of respondents were nonbinary.

Respondent Profile (By Age)

  • 7% of respondents were Generation Z.
  • 31% of respondents were Millennials.
  • 20% of respondents were Generation X.
  • 38% of respondents were Baby Boomers.
  • 4% of respondents were Traditionalists.
